Each entry in my Project 365 will have a theme or style which I want to capture. For the first entry in my Project 365 I decided to capture something from my workspace at home and the theme I have chosen is Science Fiction which has always been something I’ve loved. I have a number of collectibles from over the years from various video games and one of my favourites is a small statue from Aliens: Colonial Marines which shows a Marine in a power loader fighting a Xenomorph. I used my 50mm lens on a tripod for this photo and the black background is an old TV I have gathering dust.

I felt like the dark backdrop really helped to make the figures stand out, and I used a long exposure with a low ISO setting since I wanted to avoid noise in the photo due to it being quite dark when I took the photo. I also wanted to avoid odd shadowing since I don’t really have any good lighting equipment yet, so I guess low-ISO and long exposure is the best I can do at the moment. Clearly this is a learning process so I’m sure I’ll find better ways to do this in the future but the result turned out quite well anyway.
